County supports Horse Canyon rest stop

The plan for a new highway rest stop and view area on US-6 between Price and Green River advanced Wednesday when the County Commission agreed to fund the county's share of the maintenance expense. Visitors will pick up the tab because the $3,000 per year will come from transient room tax revenues collected at motels.

UDOT plans to build the facility at the Horse Canyon Road turnoff at mile post 267, which is roughly halfway between the two cities. It would be standard loop design and able to handle all sizes of vehicles. Restrooms would be vault toilets, flushable.

UDOT will handle maintenance such as daily cleaning, adding water to vaults and pumping vaults as needed, garbage collection, snow removal and pavement. The cost of this will be $12,000 per year, with Carbon and Emery counties each contributing $3,000 and UDOT picking up the balance.

The Castle Country Travel Region has plans to install an informational kiosk at the site to inform visitors of the places to see in the area. The cost of that will also come out of the travel bureau's budget.

Carbon County will cover emergency services such as ambulance and police.
