Dinos battle hard against 4A Skyhawks
You could see the advantage during warm up. The 4A Salem Hills Skyhawks have a much bigger squad than the Dinos, both in number of players and size. But that didn't deter Carbon from coming out fighting hard. The Dinos ended up losing 35-15, but not before giving their fans a game to talk about.
The Skyhawks received the opening kick-off. They headed both up and down the field as they had success and then penalties. The Dino defense also made some key stops and Salem came up empty handed. Carbon struggled on their early offensive drives and by the end of the quarter it was scoreless.
Salem did manage to score three times in the second quarter. They kicked for three, scored a touchdown and ran in the extra point for a pair. The Skyhawks ended the half with another field goal to head to the locker room up by 14.
Carbon's offense came out flat in the third quarter, but their defense only allowed a single touchdown and the game remained in reach.
The Skyhawks scored again early in the fourth, but the Dinos still had a few tricks up their sleeve. The Dinos ran a hook and ladder play in which quarterback Dakota Cisneros passed to Colton England who then handed off to Jordan Blanc who ran it 70 yards for the first Dino score of the night. Dusty Blackham ran the ball in for two and the Dinos had their first eight points on the board.
The Dinos attempted an on-side kick, but Salem Hills took possession. Carbon recovered a Skyhawk fumble and then called a hitch and pass play. Cisneros made a hitch pass to Blanc who then passed to Nick Haycock for a 37 yard TD. Tanner Gagnon kicked the extra point.
A second try at an on-side kick was successful for the Dinos, but they were unable to capitalize. They turned it over late in the game for the final Skyhawk score.
All in all Coach Jeff Blanc was happy with the drive of his team.
"We were down 28-0 and battled back," he said. "We have a few things to correct this week in practice and there were a couple of things that didn't go our way, but overall it was a good effort for our team."
Coach Blanc felt like the defense really stepped it up, especially Gagnon who just came off of an injury and kicked the extra points and punts as well as grabbing an interception. Nick Haycock also had a pair of key interceptions. Kris Murdock recovered two fumbles and Ozzie Loaiza scooped up one. Jordan Blanc led the team with 13 tackles and was all over the field. Coach Blanc also noted that special teams player England broke free for some big returns to help set up the Dino offense.
The Dinos head to Moab next week for a battle with Grand and then to Emery for a game against the Spartans the following week.
