Cal Ripken 12-year-olds take third in region
For four years running, five if you count a year they didn't keep records, the Cal Ripkin 12 year old baseball team from Carbon County have taken the Utah State Cal Ripken title. They did it again this year and earned another trip to the region tournament and a chance to face a team that seems to give them fits every year, Visalia, Calif.
This year the tournament was held in Nephi instead of California. Carbon began the tournament on a great note. On skills day, Cole Fossat from Price took the title in the home run derby. Dillon Lowe tied for third.
The team then beat Delta, Calif. 4-1 to advance to the winners bracket in the double elimination tournament. Fossat and Brayson Hurdsman combined on the mound to get the victory. Fossat and Lowe each hit a long ball in the win.
Thursday Carbon defeated Spanish Springs, Nev. 7-2 to continue their winning ways. Kasey Moynier took a turn at going deep. Hurdsman went five off the mound and Mitch Olson came on in relief.
With only two teams left to beat, Visalia took its turn at Carbon. Visalia dominated the game and went on to win 10-0. Visalia would end up tournament champions.
Carbon then faced off against Hawaii. Both had a loss to Visalia and it was between them to settle the battle for second place. Even though Hawaii jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, Carbon battled back and kept it a seesaw affair. But Hawaii was a bit stronger and took the second spot with a 13-9 win. Lowe had yet another homer in the game. Fossat and Hurdsman combine their efforts from the mound.
"I am so proud of these kids. The whole team played well and they bounced back from a tough loss to give their all against Hawaii. It is the fourth state title for Jerad Lessar, Cole Fossat and Brayson Hurdsman. That's an amazing feat for those kids," stated team manager Bob Fossat.
