Rantings and Ravings

We are halfway through the big four summer events that help define our community. The Greek Festival, International Days, the County Fair and Helper Arts Festival are what I call our big four.

We also have several other smaller celebrations as well including East Carbon/Sunnyside Community Daze, Wellington's Pioneer days and Green River's Melon Days just to name a few.

All around this country of ours similar community gatherings are underway this time of year. I remember growing up in the midwest where we had Steamboat Days and then had the county fair. They were the highlights of our summers. Many great memories remain from those fun days.

These are the things that strengthen a community. I make sure that I find time to get to many of these community functions. I usually don't spend a lot of money, but it gives me the chance to see old friends I have lost touch with among other things.

These are also a great venue for our local talent to show off. From the littlest dancers to the most polished singers it is a wonderful experience to take the stage and let things shine.

This year's parade was one of the best on many years. The variety of entries were fun to watch, but the kids on the sidelines were even more entertaining.

The visual artists and crafters also have the opportunity to show off what they can do. As people take time to browse the booths at the Arts Festival this year, remember that the artisans have poured their souls into what they are displaying. They have to pay for the booth and sit for three days waiting for someone to value their hard work.

These functions are also a chance for political candidate to come down and try and smooze some votes. We do seem to host many more Democratic candidates than Republican ones.

It is a chance for us to express our concerns, wants and needs to the perspective candidates. They are eager to listen and earn our votes.

If they are successful in getting into office then maybe something that they heard while they were here may help them shape legislation that is favorable to us in Carbon County. It is one of the few chances many of us have to sit and chat with future lawmakers.

But mostly having these events gives us a chance to gather as a community and just enjoy what we have and who we are living with. It is part of the glue that binds us together. Young, old, rich, poor, leaders, followers, fringe and mainstream we mingle and laugh together in a common purpose of community spirit.

I look forward to the rest of our summer events. I will be a bit saddened as the Arts Festival winds up because it will signal the end of another great summer.
