MUTUAL - Mike Vlamakis, age 86, passed away peacefully on Aug. 1, 2010 surrounded by his loving family, following a hard-fought struggle with cancer.
He was born on Jan. 19, 1924 in Mutual, a son of Greek immigrants, Kaliope Kastrinakis and George Vlamakis. After Kaliope passed away at the early age of 42, Mike was blessed with a loving stepmother, Tassia Giannarakis.
Growing up in Carbon County, Mike was proud of his heritage, his association with the Greek community there, and cherished the lifelong friendships he made. Always the sports enthusiast, Mike was a member of the Helper American Legion baseball team, who prevailed as Utah State Champions in 1940-41. He was a referee for the Helper City League basketball games and also managed a girl's softball team.
Mike married Dorothy Hardee on Sept. 2, 1953 and they spent their early married years in Helper. Mike was transferred to SLC in 1957, where they made their new home and raised two children. Known for his strong work ethic, he worked two jobs to support his family, and enjoyed a very well deserved retirement after working 32 years for the Rio Grande Railroad and Farmers Insurance Company.
In recent years, Mike and Dorothy have enjoyed many years of traveling, cruises, camping with their extended family and friends, and getting together with the Rio Grande Vets Association. Mike liked Greek cooking, Chuck-A-Rama, the Utah Jazz (when they were winning), his New York Yankees and a good bargain. But most of all, he loved being with his family and will be remembered as a loving dad and husband who was always there for us. We will miss him more than words can say.
Survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Kathy (Jeff) Connors; son, Michael Vlamakis; brother, Gabe (Sherrie) Vlamakis; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by: parents; stepmother; nephew, Stephen Vlamakis; and many dear lifelong friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan. Friends and family may call Wednesday, Aug. 4, from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Thursday. Interment Redwood Memorial Cemetery. Online condolences www.memorialutah.com
The family would like to express our thanks and appreciation to all those at the Huntsman Cancer Infusion Center for their loving care and support of Mike during the last two years.

Do you think the Utah Legislature should increase appropriations for public education in Utah beyond the current legislative trend in the past few years of funding only for growth in student population?
