2 killed, 3 injured in canyon rollover
Two Price women were killed and three other passengers were seriously hurt in a one-car rollover Thursday on S.R. 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon.
The Utah Highway Patrol reported that passengerTanya Hoyt, 27, was dead at the scene. Driver Crystalee Wagner, 36, was evacuated by medical helicopter to Timpanogos Hospital, where she died.
According to eyewitness Robert Andresen of Spanish Fork, both women were ejected as the vehicle rolled at least three times. UHP reports, however, that Ms. Wagner was wearing a seat belt.
A third victim, a 14-year-old girl still unidentified, was helicoptered to Primary Children's Medical Center. Two other victims, described by Andresen as a man and woman, were rushed by ambulance from the scene.
Two other passengers, a four-year-old girl and a toddler, appeared to be not seriously hurt, according to the witness.
Rescuers had to extricate the survivors from the crushed vehicle.
The rollover occured at about milepost 184.5 shortly before noon. According to the UHP, traffic was backed up because of an earler accident further west. The 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound as it rounded a curve and encountered the stopped vehicles. The driver was unable to stop.
Andresen, who watched the tragedy unfold in his rearview mirror, said the Jeep swerved off the right side of the road, skidded up a steep hillside and rolled several times.
Andresen said a nurse and an off-duty EMT helped him in trying to assist the victims before emergency responders arrived.
The other crash that precipitated the traffic jam happend several hours earlier, when a swerving car crashed head-on into another vehicle, severely injuring two people. A relative of the driver of the out of control vehicle said that the driver was diabetic and apparently had gone into shock.
