Pipe bursting in Price

Workers at the corner of 700 East and Main assemble the equipment that will ram through an old sewer line beneath Main St. and replace it with a new one. They will attach the heavy metal nose cone on the right of the photo to the metal cylinder, then hook up the new 8-inch plastic pipe to the assembly. Then a winch on the other side of Main St. through the old pipe. The cone bursts the pipe and pushes the fragments aside, making a gap for the new pipe to slide through. The Price City project is more expensive than a simple excavation, but City Engineer Gary Sonntag said it saves disrupting the one of the city's principal traffic arteries. Above, the new pipe slides under Main St. as traffic moves freely.
