Something is there that loves a wall

A group of scouts from Santaquin take turns bouncing off the Carbon County Recreation Department's climbing wall during a recent rappelling workshop. The portable wall has become a fixture at county events for more than a decade now. According to recreation director Steve Christensen, the wall provides a controlled environment for inexperienced climbers to learn the basics of climbing and rappelling. The second phase of the workshop involves rappelling down the face of the department's climbing area in Spring Canyon. Christensen said the recreation department will host and train workshops for groups and individuals for a nominal fee. The county took over the climbing property in the late 1990s when a local mining company donated it. According to Christensen, the company was concerned about liability issues caused by uncontrolled climbing, so the donation suited both recreationists and the company. Christensen warns would-be climbers that the pastime can be dangerous for the inexperienced. He advises taking the course from the county before attempting actual rappels from any of the cliffs in the region.
