The Carbon's Girls Golf Team finally got a break with some good weather on Thursday when they played at Meadow Brook GC in the 2010 3A Girls State Championship. Kelcy Otani, Lexi Gagon, Audra Eaqinto and Shelby Wilson finished in third place as a team with 205 points. The two teams ahead of them in the standings were Desert Hills in first with 237 points and Park City ending in second at 226 points.

"It was a 'grinding' day of golf. The girls fought hard for every point, but in the end the smiles erased all the missed putts and wayward swings," remarked Coach Kenji Otani about the great finish.

The top three scores for the Lady Dinos are what counted in the scoring. Kelcy Otani led Carbon with 72 points, Lexi Gagon ended with 68 and Audra Eaquinto finished with 65 points for the 205 team total. Shelby Wilson anchored the team with a solid 62 points.

In the individual standings, Sammi Crouch of Park City took medalist honors with an impressive three under, 69 stroke play. Kelcy Otani rounded out the top ten with a score of 90. That also earned her First Team All-State honors. Lexi Gagon finished in 12th place, Audra Eaquinto 15th and Shelby Wilson 18th in the standings.

"What a great accomplishment for CHS Girls Golf. Moving from 13th place in 2009 to a third place finish in State, in 2010. A top 10 finish would have been good, but with this team that wasn't good enough," stated Coach Otanin. "Earlier this season, the Lady Dinos set out to make the top five or win it all. Good goals and a great outcome considering the competition and the fact, this is only our second season. I am so proud of the whole team, they took second in the region, third at State and they did it as a team."

Otani wrapped up the season by adding, "This has been a great season, despite the weather and scheduling. We added six members to the team, which increased our depth and the interest in highschool girls golf really increased. These are talented and wonderful young women, each and every member of this team. I am very proud of them all. We would not have accomplished everything we did, without the help of every girl. This Lady Dinos golf team definitely has the skill, desire and love of the game to win it all."
