Great run for Carbon track

Coach Jimmy Jewkes was a little disappointed in the team's performances at the region track meet. But those that made the cut to move on to the state meet more than made up for it with great efforts over the weekend. Twenty-one of the Carbon High team qualified for a trip to the big meet.

"We are definitely having a much better meet here than region. I don't know why, but we did enough to get kids qualified; but that was it, at the region meet. I am so exited about how we are doing here," Jewkes said on Friday afternoon as his team was at the midway point at the state meet.

Brock Morely had been favored all season to defend his hurdle title at the meet. He had been on track to do that when he caught a spike on a hurdle in the Carbon invitational and went down hard. The prelim race at state was the first time he had been back on the track. He left nothing to doubt on Friday as he broke the Carbon school record for the 300 hurdles in his heat. On Saturday he broke it again as he had the best time in the entire state in the 300 hurdle with a 38.50. The old school record was 38.90

Morely also took the title in the 110 hurdles with a 14.56 finish. His brother JJ finished ninth in the 110 with a 41.76. Karissa Nelson ran a personal best as she took third in the 300 meter hurdles with a 46.87 and then fourth in the 100 hurdles with a 16.34.

Carbon took fifth in the 4x400 relay with a team consisting of Kristen Jewkes, Nelson, Regan Powell, and Diane Olsen. The boy's 4x 400 team of Luke Olson, JJ Morely, Brock Morely and Kaleb Kulow ended the day with a third place finish.

Kristen Jewkes took seventh in the high jump and Kaliegh Potts ended in eighth.
