After a solid season of softball from the Carbon Lady Dinos, it was two innings that took them out of a chance to advance to the state finals. In the first game against Cedar City it was a five-run sixth that handed them a 3-7 loss. In the consolation game it was a 12-run first that finished them off with a 16-2 season-ending defeat. Despite the scores, the girls played some good ball against some pretty good teams but just came up short in the end.

The Lady Dinos jumped out on top in the first game with Cedar. They were up two to one into the fourth when Cedar tied it up. Both squads were scoreless in the fifth. Carbon pitcher Kenzie Cave gave up a two run homer in the sixth and then Cedar put together a string of hits to push three more over. Carbon was unable to match it on offense in the top of the seventh, but did get one final run.

The Lady Dinos had 10 hits in the game, but just couldn't parlay them into scoring. Cave and Brianne Vogrinec connected for doubles. Darrian Smith smashed a triple. Chelsea Bullings had three hits in the game.

In the consolation game against Emery, Coach Tony Pinedo had to make a tough choice. Pitcher Breanna Hurdsman had sprained her ankle earlier in the week. Kenzie Cave had just finished throwing a complete game against Cedar. Cave stepped up and felt like she could go another game.

The Spartans took advantage of Cave's tired arm and quickly began putting up runs. A tough call that could have ended the inning did not go Carbon's way and Emery continued to do damage. Hurdsman came in despite her injury and finally got them out of the inning, but Carbon faced an insurmountable 12-0 deficit.

Taking that half of an inning out of the equation, the Lady Dinos played the rest of the game tough and the scoring was 4-2, Emery, for the final four innings. Hurdsman stayed in to finish despite being hit on the injured ankle while batting.

Pinedo was disappointed that the team was not able to win one of the two to advance. He knows that they could beat many of the teams still in the mix, but he added, "That's the nature of softball."

He went on to praise his entire squad for their play all season and is really looking forward to having most of the team back again next year. But he also had some good words for both of his pitchers and their efforts in the final two games of the season.
