A car trying to pass a truck was left totaled after it ran into another truck on a section of U.S. Highway 6 Thursday morning.

An 85 year old male who was not identified, from Moab, was driving a silver 2009 Pontiac G6 when he allegedly hit a semi-truck that was passing him. The driver was behind a Savage truck in the right lane heading westbound on U.S. 6 when he attempted to pass the truck in front of his car. The driver then hit the truck driving in the passing lane, which caused the Pontiac to swerve into the eastbound lanes before coming to a stop, according to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Levi Oman.

The accident occurred around 10:35 a.m. near milepost 254.

According to Oman, the driver of the Pontiac said he accelerated to 75 miles per hour to try and pass the truck in front of him. He did not see the truck in the left lane trying to pass both vehicles and was hit from behind causing the Pontiac to come to a stop on the other side of the road.

Respondents to the scene included the Highway Patrol, Carbon County Sheriffs, Rescue 5 from Wellington and a Carbon County ambulance.

There were no injuries at the scene and both drivers did not request medical attention.

Failing to yield and speed were factors in the accident, according to Oman.
