Food bank, garden gain from Vista help
Boys and Girls Club of America and BEAR Americorps VISTA's will be doing service at the Community Garden/Carbon County Food Bank located at the corner 400 S. and 100 E. in mid-May.
The organizations would like to invite all current and alumni VISTA's or any other volunteer groups in the area to join with them on Friday, May 14 and Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each of those days to help prepare and plant vegetables for the garden that services the Food Bank and many families in the area.
Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves and lunch.
Boys and Girls Club VISTA's April Poulsen and Lacey Mangum and BEAR VISTA's Judi Dexter, Dolores Roberts and Merlina Stevens will be reaching out to local nursery's in the area and hope to receive many of the plants, fertilizer and soil treatments as donations to the project.
The VISTA'S in Carbon and Emery Counties have served in many capacities for years. The organization has had several people who helped out in East Carbon, Green River and in Price. The organization has not only covered programs such as BEAR and the Boys and Girls club, but also the Carbon Women's Shelter, Active ReEntry, Habitat for Humanity, after school programs and others.
VISTA means Volunteers in Service to America and provides full time members to non-profit, faith based and other community organizations to create and expand those programs to be substainable. As a VISTA, workers receive a small living stipend each month, an insurance program and at the end of one year of service either $4,725 for college or a $1,200 cash stipend.
For those that are interested in either obtaining VISTA's workers for their program or to become a VISTA go online at www.americorps.com or call April Durrant at 801-524-5411 ext 3.
