Rural firefighters to gather in Price this weekend

Fire, rescue and life safety Instructors from the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy and Utah Valley University will provide basic and advanced training for rural firefighters on May 7 and 8 at the Carbon County Fire Training Facility for focused firefighter training.

Firefighters from as far south as Bluff and as far north as Snowville will meet at the facility on Friday.

Budget shortfalls have caused many rural fire departments to drastically cut, or in some cases eliminate, their training budgets.

"Regular training exercises are essential for firefighters to safely and efficiently protect their communities," says Paul Bedont, Price City's Fire Chief.

In 2009 the Utah Legislature recognized a need for rural firefighters to receive basic firefighter training and allocated funding to the State Fire Marshals Office and the Utah Fire Prevention Board to arrange for the training to occur.

The Utah Fire and Rescue Academy, a department of Utah Valley University, was contracted to provide the training for rural fire departments serving populations of less than 10,000.

The portion of the firefighter training occurring in Price will focus on structural firefighting, firefighter survival, fire behavior and vehicle crash rescue.

The Carbon County Fire Training Facility is located at 303 South Fairground Road in Price.
