Cougars shut out Lady Dinos
With third place in the region pretty much in the bag, the Carbon girl's softball team need play every game with an eye to the play-in game. Last time around Union beat the Dinos 9-0. This Tuesday Carbon still lost, but this time only allowed Union to score 6 runs in the 6-0 loss.
With no blowout innings, Coach Tony Pinedo was satisfied with the team defense that Carbon exhibited on the field. Kenzie Cave had another solid outing despite taking the loss.
"Kenzie used her changeup and kept them off balance. They got 14 hits, but our defense kept them from turning those into runs. We missed AO's (Alexis Oliver) presence in the outfield and at the plate."
Oliver was fielding a pop fly in practice and lost the ball in the sun. It hit her in the face and she was sporting two shiners and a very swollen and bruised face as she sat on the bench watching the game.
But the one thing missing in the effort for the Lady Dinos was offense. Carbon only had one runner the entire game as they seemed mystified by the good pitching from Union. Pinedo was a bit frustrated with that aspect of the game and is hoping he can help his squad learn to make the small adjustments at the plate needed to find their stroke against the good pitcher.
The Lady Dinos are scheduled to head to Manti for a non-region game on Thursday and that will depend on the weather as will the Friday game scheduled at Park City on Friday. The Friday game is the last region game for the Dinos of the season before the play-ins.
