Dinos salvage game, pick up win over Union
It was one of three must- win games that the Dinos have this week if they want the title of Region 10 champs. At times the win seemed to be in jeopardy, but Carbon pulled out a 10-9, eight inning victory over the Union Cougars on Wednesday.
Union jumped out to a 7-0 lead on starter Beau Rich before the top of the second. Jake Nichols was brought in and finally shut it down. He went on to throw solid for another four innings.
The Dinos put up a run in the bottom of the second and had a great third, scoring six to tie it up. Carbon went ahead a run in the fifth, but Union stole it back with two in the sixth. Keny Seals blasted one over the fence to knot it at eight.
Neither team could break the stalemate in the seventh. Carbon got a break with Hayden Basinger, blasting a solid hit to score Seth Tryon for the win in the eight.
In addition to Seals home run, Basinger hit a pair of doubles and Dylan Vogrinec and Julian Tamllos each added a two bagger as well. Basinger also got the win on the mound even though he only came in and got the final out in the eighth. Vogrinec also took a turn on the mound after Nichols.
"I am glad we got the win, but at times I wasn't sure we would," said Coach Troy Moynier after it was all over. "We had chances to put it away and we left 11 runners on base. But I am thrilled that even when we were down 7-0 we fought back and never gave up. Many teams might have folded and let them 10 run them, but we just came back and got the win. It is only the second game since we played Cedar that we did that and won, so I'm glad to see we could do it when when we had to."
Now all that is between Carbon and the region 10 title is two games with Park City this Friday afternoon. If Carbon splits with Park City they may end of in a three way tie with Wasatch and Park City.
Game time for the Park City double-header begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Carbon High field.
