An extra-curricular loss?

Spring sports have their share of challenges. Snow, wind and even heat can plague the teams as they compete early in the season. But also end-of-year activities pull players away.

The Carbon soccer team had to deal with that as they faced Union on Friday. With several key seniors away, the remaining players had to fill in spots they normally don't play and lost, 3-1 to the Cougars.

The Dinos played a solid game despite being shorthanded as they opened up the game.

Each team made eight shots on goal in the first half, but Union managed to get two of theirs past the Carbon goalie for scores.

In the second half, Carbon came out hot and scored to pull the game close. Eric Yan did the honors for the Dinos after Paul Ramirez did a flip to inbound the ball over the heads of the defenders and right to Yan.

One-on-one with the Union goalie, he didn't hesitate and sent it flying past for the score.

Unfortunately the momentum shifted to the Cougars and they scored once more to take the game 3-1.

"Our boys played well even though we were shorthanded," remarked Coach Patrick Clifford after the game. "Their (Union) goalie made some great saves or the outcome might have been different.

"I wish it were a win, but still it was another moral victory for us. We played great the whole game."

The soccer season is winding down with only two weeks left. This Wednesday ALA will visit and the Dinos are looking for their first win of region action against the Eagles. Ben Lomond will also be in town on Friday. This will be a non-region game and it will be the final home game of the season for Carbon.
