By Kobi Marchello
Utah Foster Care Foundation Price office

I am shocked and appalled by the comparison of the Utah Foster Care Foundation's upcoming "Fun Run" to the Bataan Death March in the article by Greg Eichelberger on March 16 (Sun Advocate). The article was supposed to be about what happened at the Price City Council meeting and our event was on the calendar to be approved by the council. Instead, the reporter made sarcastic comments about items on the agenda. It belonged on the editorial page, not in a news article.

A sad but true fact is that children are being abused and neglected in our community. These children need caring families to provide for them while their parents work to resolve issues in their lives.

In an attempt to educate our community about this need to help our most vulnerable children, the Utah Foster Care Foundation is holding a Fun Run/Walk for the second year on May 15. This is a chance for the community to be made aware of ways they can help children who have been abused or neglected.

The foster care program is designed to provide safe permanent families for children, either through successfully returning them to their birth parents or providing a permanent adoptive family. To compare our "Fun Run" to such an historical event where American POWs died is a great misrepresentation.

I hope you all join us on Saturday, May 15 at 9 a.m. at the Peace Gardens. I'd also like to invite Mr. Eichelberger to the event, so he can get to know the community he is reporting on every day.

(The editor apologizes for the misunderstanding which resulted from the writer thinking he was poking fun at himself concerning running, not at the event. The Sun Advocate truly believes in the Fun Run and supports it and other events for foster children 100 percent.)
