Boys slice off sweep at Pizza Hut Classic
If this weekend's play at the St George Pizza Hut Classic Tournament is an indication of what is to come, the season looks very bright for the Carbon High team.
Competing in the classic, the club won all four games. defeating Bear River, 4-2, and Cedar, 7-6, before wrapping it up with a decisive, 12-2 whomping on Tooele for a shot at the championship.
Several of the players for the Dinos that had a big impact in the wins are only sophomores. Finally, the team faced 4A Dixie for title and finished big with 9-2 decision.
It was a defensive duel between Bear River and Carbon. Both teams put up a run in the second and then could not score again until Bear River added one in the fifth. Carbon came back with three in the sixth to secure the win. Sophomore Jaren McCourt got the win off the mound. Junior Clint Finkbiner went 3-3 at the plate including a two-run triple in the sixth.
Later, the Dinos took on Cedar, which jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second inning. The Dinos finally tied it in the sixth only to see Cedar jump back up by on in the bottom half of the frame. But a final push including a home run by sophomore Seth Tryon gave Carbon the win. Beau Rich and Julian Tamllos each hit a double in the winning cause. Sophomore Dylan Vogrinec picked up the win.
On Saturday, it was all Dinos as they scored in every inning but the second off the Tooele pitchers. Tooele was only able to put up runs in the first frame and were shut out the rest of the way and the game, which ended in five iinings due to the mercy rule.
Jaren McCourt got his second win of the young season. Rich,Tamllos and Daniel Peczuh all hit a double in the Carbon offensive barrage.
Peczuh got the Dinos rolling against Dixie on Saturday night with a three-run homer over the fence and the team never looked back. Jake Nichols (1-0) got the start for Carbon and went the distance.
Coach Troy Moynier was excited about the way his team opened the season. "We are the 2010 Pizza Hut champs and the last time we did that was in 2001," he said.
That was a year the Dinos won the 3A baseball championship.
It was a different player everyday that made the big plays," Moynier said. "We played as a team and every one we beat was a ranked team in 3A or 4A. We took on some really tough competition this weekend."
The results of the Wednesday Carbon-Emery showdown will be published on March 23.
