Back-to-back close home losses frustrate Dinos
Carbon lost several members of its 2009 starting line-up to graduation, but head coach Patrick Clifford sees some good talent in the new roster, but it will take some time for the team to gel as a cohesive squad - but that's what pre-season games are about.
After road losses to South Summit and Uintah, the Dinos played their home opener Friday, March 12 against Richfield. They also took on Canyonview on Saturday, March 13 before the snow started flying. They lost both games, 2-1.
Against Richfield, it was the Dinos that drew first blood with a quick score in the first five minutes. Brandon Gomez was the player that sent a follow-up shot across for the tally.
That lasted until the final minutes of the first half when Richfield sent a shot past Carbon goalie Adam Bedont to tie things up. The Wildcats scored once more in the second half to take the win.
"We outshot them, 28-7, but they managed to get two in to our one," said Clifford after the game. "It was a little frustrating to know we outplayed them and still fell a little short of the win."
On Saturday, Carbon again scored first as Shin Seongdae did the honors for the Dinos. As with the Friday battle, Canyonview scored in the late part of the half to tie it up. Shots on goal were pretty even for both teams.
As the game rolled into the second half, the Falcons stepped it up and dominated play for the first 10 minutes. Then Canyonview committed a hard foul on a Carbon player, who was down for almost five minutes.
That incident lit a fire under the Dinos and they took control. Unfortunately, they could not get the ball to pass the line and failed to score.
The Falcons put one more in the net to give the Dinos their second 2-1 loss in two days.
"Canyonview is a very good team and we played right with them," Clifford said. "We just need to find a way to score and then we will really put up some wins. I hope we can do that soon because we start region play."
The Dinos will be on the road for regional match-ups with Union on Wednesday, March 17 and ALA on Friday, March 19.
