Contamination site discussed with Wellington council

Chris Rohrer with Utah's Division of Natural Resources spoke to Wellington City Council about the proposed clean up plan of the Knight-Ideal Loadout location. Working with the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program, the collaboration plans to remove coal and contaminated soil from the area in preparation for future work at the site. Work was originally done in 1983-84 which focused on immediate safety concerns. Now AMRP is coming back to clean it up fully with the intent of having the site useable for the city. Some of the goals for the project are to; clean up coal, construction debris, level areas ball fields and prepare site for a city park. Wellington sent a "wish list" to Rohrer in which they expressed a desire to turn the area into a city park. Design plans are in the works and Rohrer has met with former Mayor Houskeeper and he expressed a desire for a community fish pond and ball fields. Rohrer expressed a desire for the community to be involved so they don't build something that the community will use.

"Our program mission is to reclaim abandoned mines. Coal processing facilities fall under that umbrella, that's how that property is eligible," Rohrer said.

"It's going to take the rest of this year to look at site and figure out the problems and how to fix them, if everything goes right we should be able to start construction next year," Rohrer concluded.

As plans are drawn up they will be released to the public during forums to discuss additional wants or needs for the park.

Fire Chief Johnny Powell came before the council to give the fire report as it currently is. There were been nine total calls for the month of Feb. One fire and eight rescues. Two fire hydrants are still out of service and the department is awaiting confirmation of the completed work. Powell also requested that police be allowed to use code when responding to assistance calls. Code refers to lights and sirens on the police vehicles. It was unclear if it is lawful or not for officers to run code when responding to fire calls.

Discussion concerning whom to award city vehicle maintenance contracts to. Questions ranging from brands of oil used and cost of different services were raised and the motion was tabled until further investigation into the matter is conducted.
