Council works with seniors struggling with debt
Do you know a senior citizen or disabled person who is struggling with debt and receiving threatening mail or harassing phone calls? If so, help may be available from Debt Counsel for Seniors & the Disabled (DCSD).
The DCSD program was established to help a growing group of people whose rights are regularly violated by creditors and collection agencies. DCSD is an attorney supervised debt assistance program that can help stop harassing phone calls and threatening letters that many seniors and disabled people receive from unsecured creditors such as credit card companies, collection agencies, doctors and hospitals. Many seniors and disabled people do not realize that because their only income is from social security or from disability checks, the law protects them.
"I was in a position where I was receiving many harassing phone calls and letters and the stress was really effecting my health,", says Ronald, a DCSD client from new York. "Now I don't have to choose between satisfying those harassing creditors and eating, paying my rent, and buying prescription drugs. My whole outlook on life has improved and now my monthly payment is just $10 a month and I don't have to deal with my creditors and I have not had to file for bankruptcy. I am so grateful that I found out about the DCSD program."
