For the eighth year in a row, College of Eastern Utah's automotive department was ranked in the top 20 schools named as Best in America, according to Tomorrow's Technician/Chicago Pneumatic School of the Year.

Tomorrow's Technician received 266 entries for this year's competition with CEU, Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colo., and Northwest Kansas Technical College, Goodland, Kan., all named from the Southwest region on the United States.

Department chair Stan Martineau believes that CEU's Automotive Program was ranked top 20 because of each student's success.

"Last fall, 13 out of 14 students passed the national test," he stated. "Nationally about 60 percent of students pass the test, so CEU is well ahead of their game."

Martineau stated that a former student stopped by the college recently and informed him that she is working as a technician in Alaska because of what she learned while enrolled in the automotive program at CEU.

Another factor of success, Martineau said, is the amount of community service that the students contribute. This month they will travel to Blanding to give a two-day workshop, are working on a community member's car that needs a vehicle to get to work and are presenting a workshop at the Castle Valley Center.

He noted that every year for the last eight years, at least one student from CEU has placed first in state at the Skills USA competition (formerly known as the VICA program).

Not only has the automotive program received top 20 the past eight years, it has been ranked among the top three by the Automotive Industry Planning Council and rated a Program of Excellence by Snap-On Tools.
