Swimmers place third in regional championship

The Carbon swim team had their regional championship meet on Jan. 23 and placed third out of six teams.

Coach Kamera Davis was pleased.

"This was our first region championship in the new region and we were ready. We did great," he said

In the Carbon girls medley, relay team finished third. It consisted of Jr. Megan Barnett (back), Sr Kenzie Mantz (breast), So. Aysha Black (fly) and So Jill Malone (free).

The boys medley relay consisted of Fr. Lance Riche (back), Sr. Nick Torres (breast),Sr. Dallen Garvin (fly), and Sr. Brett Davis (free). They took second.

In the 200 free relay, the team consisted of Jr. Kim Callaway, Jr. Jill Fincher, So. Heather Bone, and Fr. Paula Gibson. They ended in fourth.

In the 400 free relay, the same team dropped more than five seconds off previous best time and placed third. Also the boys 400 free relay was made up of Garvin, Jr. Brandon Gibson, Riche, and Brett Davis garnered third.

In the individual events, Chrissy Cox finished her high school swimming career with a 14th in the 200 free and 23rd in the 100 free. Brett Davis finished eight in the 200 I.M. and11th in the 100 free. Davis will be going to state in three relays. Garvin ended 15th in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 butterfly. He will be going to state in three relays and the100 fly.

Mantz placed 16th in the 100 free and eighth in the 100 breast. Jordan Pinedo ended 19th in the200 free and 12th in the 500 free.

Toby Prettyman also swam his last meet with a 14th place finish in the 200 free and 10th in the 500 free. Nick Torres ended ninth in the 200 I.M. and 15th in the 100 breast. He will be swimming in the medley relay at state.

"I will miss all the seniors thanks for a great year." added Davis.

Other top Carbon swimmers in individual events are Aysha Black with a seventh in the 200 I.M. and ninth in the 100 fly. Fincher ended in10th in the 200 free. Bone was 11th in the 200 free and 10th in the 100 fly. Malone grabbed ninth in the 500. Barnett finished up 11th in the100 fly and 10th in the 100 back. Jenae Wilhemi ended in 10th in the 500 free.

Coach Davis summed up the season, "This has been a great year. We ended up with 28 boys and 13 girls on our team. This is much bigger than last year. This is the first year for a lot of them and I hope they return. Next year looks very promising."
