Skyline Tractor Salvage Project

Manti-La Sal National Forest
The Sanpete and Ferron/Price Ranger District, Manti-La Sal National
Forest is proposing to salvage dead Engelmann spruce using mechanical
equipment. The proposed Skyline Tractor Salvage Project area is
located 12 miles east of Mayfield, Utah in T. 19 S., R. 4 E., Sections
15, 16, 28, and 29. The project is planned to take place during the
summer of 2010.
Proposed Actions:
1) Remove all dead merchantable Engelmann spruce 10 inches diameter
and greater, with the exception of wildlife snags, using ground-based
systems on approximately 90 acres.
2) Post harvest weed and thin - Reduce the amount of sapling size
sub-alpine fir regeneration on the same 90 acres.
Primary Purpose:
* Salvage dead and dying trees for site preparation of artificial
spruce regeneration.
Secondary Purposes:
* Provide timber products to the local community and use the value of
the timber to offset regeneration costs.
* Reduce the amount of hazardous trees along forest roads.
* Reduce heavy fuel loading in stands to m aintain vegetation
conditions that allow fires to burn with lower intensities, in ground
fuels and reducing the rate of potential fire spread.
The public is invited to comment on our proposed action. Comments
can be either oral or written in response to this project. Comments
received, including names and addresses of those who comment, will be
considered part of the public record for this project and will be
available for public inspection.
