Carbon boy's b-ball regionals begin
The Carbon basketball team wrapped up their preseason and began region action last week. In both games, the Dinos came up short and took a loss. On Jan. 9, Carbon headed off for one last meeting with the Emery Spartans.
After beating them in the final seconds of the last meeting, this time it was all Emery in the end to beat Carbon 60-50. Region play began for the Dinos with a road trip to take on the top ranked team of the 3A rankings. Wasatch made sure the Dinos knew why as they downed them 75-51.
Carbon started strong in their meeting with Emery. But by the end of the second quarter the Spartans were in control and didn't look back. Poor free throw shooting was again a contributing factor in the loss for Carbon. Keny Seals was the only Dino in double figures with 16 points.
On Tuesday night Carbon started the game against Wasatch by turning over the ball five times in their first seven possessions. In a blink they ended the quarter in a hole 19-5. To their credit, the Dinos did not tuck their tails and quit, but stepped it up and out scored the Wasps 18-16 in the second period.
But a flat performance in the third let Wasatch build up their lead again. When the Dinos got revving again in the fourth, it was too late.
Carbon did get a balanced scoring effort out of their offense. Seals and Beau Rich put up 11 points. Daniel Peczuh was the top Dino scorer with 14. But the early turn-overs were costly to the effort.
"In the 10 years I have been coaching, this Wasatch team is one of the best we have faced. It is the first team that beat us. The other losses we have had so far this year, we beat ourselves with mistakes and missed opportunities," said Coach Ted Bianco about the loss. "I give credit to Wasatch They had good offense, defense and shot well from the post and guard positions. Even when they had kids off the bench they did not miss a beat. But I am proud of our boys as well."
"After the initial shock of playing such a good team, they stepped it up and showed they could play at that level. We had some really good spurts.
"Next time when they (Wasatch) comes to our house we need to play a full game and be ready for them from the start."
On Tuesday Carbon will be back on the road with a region game against Park City beginning at 5:15 p.m.
They will host region rival ALA on Friday with a tip-off at 7 p.m. after the Lady Dinos play ALA starting at 5:15 p.m.
