Pinnacle pounces on Independance
By MICHAEL OVERSON Sun Advocate reporter
Independence, who was the 2008 state champions, struggled greatly against Pinnacle as evidenced by the final 78-36 score that was recorded last week.
Hit hard by the Panthers' full court press Independence found themselves the end of the first quarter with a 14-2 deficit. After the first periood Independence was able to get things going for themselves but never managed to find their place on the floor enough to come back. At the end of the first half the score was 35-19.
The second half showed more of the same.
For the Panther's Chad Martino led the way with 14 points. Demetri Hullings pulled out a double double with 10 points and 11 assists. MJ Taberna and Dwight Denny split 18 points while Austin Welch had 11 points and three assists. The team played well and hitting six 3-pointers Coach Jeff Bowen attributed the success to the implementation of the press and good hustle by all his kids.
With the rotation coming together and 10 players finding their niche it's easy to see why more players than just the starters are getting playing time and doing well.
Coach Bowen stated that he wants good depth on the team, being able to control the court and being aggressive.
The team is now 4-1. Everyone is hoping the team won't cool down with the long holiday break. Pinnacle comes back Jan. 4 to play Paradigm at home.
