By Betty Hathaway

As membership chairman for the American Legion Auxiliary, unit 73, Huntington, I am making a plea to all persons, who are eligible for membership to come forward and join our organization. We are desperately in need of active members. We are grateful to all our faithful members who pay their dues, but we are getting older. We need some younger members. I urge all you grandmothers and mothers to talk to your daughters and granddaughters about the privilege and honor of belonging to the American Legion Auxiliary. It is not an organization that everyone can belong to.

To be eligible you must be the mother, wife, sister, daughter, granddaughter or great granddaughter of a current member of the American Legion or a deceased veteran who served during any of the great conflicts.

The Auxiliary is women, of all ages and from all walks of life, who join together in the fellowship of giving. No matter how an Auxiliary member chooses to contribute, she can help fill a need and address one of the countless concerns through our many programs: Americanism, children and youth, community service, education, Girls state/Girls Nation, Legislative Support for Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation. Our purpose is to defend and teach the principals of democracy. To uphold the law of the land to foster patriotism, to venerate and serve our veterans, to instill a sense of obligation to the community, state and nation, to guard the basic freedoms of religion, expression and choice, to support the work of the American Legion, to continue our association with devotion to God and our county.

I ask you to give serious thought to your blessings and priorities in your life. Thousands of men and women are sacrificing 24 hours a day fighting, losing their lives or coming home mortally wounded for the freedoms that we take for granted, we do not take time to think about and show very little appreciation for. Surely we can share a few hours a month in support of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. These organizations can not continue to operate properly with only the support of a few dedicated members.

Please join us. Stand up and say "I am proud to be an American". Let your actions speak for you. Lets get rid of our apathetic attitudes and get patriotism back in our communities. As John F. Kennedy stated, "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

I challenge you to find out who the commander of the legion and the president of the Auxiliary are of your local organization. Ask them when they hold their meetings. Put a big "red star" on your calender. Set that time and day apart. Let nothing interfere and give us your support. Call your friends and neighbors if the they are members, make arrangements to come to the meetings together. We used to have a very active unit and I would love to see that participation again.

God Bless Americans in these troubled time. Stand tall and be counted.
