Lady Dinos defeated by Emery
By TERRY WILLIS Sun Advocate sports reporter
As pre-season wears on, Coach Cami Carlson and her team are continuing to find things for the young team to work on. Against Emery toughness was a big issue. The Spartans came out against their former region rivals hard and aggressive and the Dinos were not up to the task going down to a 55-40 defeat.
Things looked good in the opening minutes of play as Tia Pappas picked the pocket of Emery twice and the Dinos were up 5-0. Then fortunes changed. After a couple of quick foul calls on the Dinos, Emery had tied it up and stole the momentum. The Spartans did not give it back for the rest of the game.
Down by 10 coming out of the locker room, the Carbon girls played hard in the third and pulled close several times, but Emery kept coming at them. With five minutes left in the game, it was again within the Dino grasp, but the ball would not fall through the net for the Dinos. In the second half they shot only 18 percent from the floor. A grim team headed to the locker room after the game to talk about what had happened.
Coach Carlson didn't have much to add. "We need to learn to play tough," she said. "That's about all I can say. When we get roughed up a bit we need to respond and instead we just kind of crawl into a hole. We have many things we still need to work on."
Pappas led the Dino scoring with 15 points and five steals and six rebounds. She was named the Carbon player of the game. Sara Potts also pulled in six boards. Miranda Averett grabbed five rebounds and six steals.
The team heads down to Richfield for a tournament this Friday and will take on Juab. On Saturday they will again face Richfield.
