It was Jan. 20, 2006 when the Carbon Dinos last beat Emery. Even now that the two teams are in different regions, the rivalry is just as fierce. In a game Friday night that saw both teams take control and both teams lose control of the game, it was a single free throw shot that decided the fate of the game. The Dinos were the victors in a 67-66 thriller.

The Spartans jumped out on top first. Carbon could not get a shot to drop either from the field or from the line. It was a free throw that finally got the team on the board. Then it was the Dinos that went on a run and at the end of the first it was Emery 12, Carbon 11.

In the second quarter it was many trips to the line for both teams. When Carbon's inside game was not working because of the taller Emery players double teaming Keny Seals as he went to the hole, the Dinos began to hit the long shot and kept themselves in the game. Emery held a slim lead most of the way through the quarter, but in the final seconds of the half, Carbon grabbed the lead by a point.

The third quarter was all Dinos until the end of it when the Spartans began to regroup and make their move. Midway through the fourth it was back to anyone's game. But the Dinos just kept making the shots when they needed to. Emery tied it with six seconds left. Carbon drove down and was fouled with 4.2 sec on the clock. They hit one of two. Emery rebounded the miss and headed down court. To the delight of the crowd, Coach Ted Bianco and the Dino team the defense held and the desperation shot missed its mark.

Full bedlam exploded in the house as Dino fans and the team spilled out to the middle of the court to hug, and sing the school song. Coach Bianco could barely contain his joy as he was congratulated by the throngs of people who watched the final moments with fingers crossed and breath held.

"This group of kids battled their hearts out all night," he exclaimed right after it was over. "We beat a very good Emery team. They are much taller than us and very athletic. Our defense was superb and it was what won the game for us."

Clint Finkbiner was top scorer for the Dinos with 18 points. Twelve of those were from beyond the three point line. Daniel Peczuh was also hot from outside. He hit the mark with three treys for most of his 12 points. Beau Rich added two threes and eight points. Brock Morley had 11 points on the night. Keny Seal was the force on the boards, pulling in eight rebounds. He also stuffed in nine points.

Carbon will entertain Manti on Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. tip off.
