CEU women struggle, Southern Idaho takes win over Eagles at home
By TERRY WILLIS Sun Advocate sports reporter
Two good teams came to town this weekend and two more losses piled up for the Lady Eagles. Northern Idaho handed CEU a 61-41 loss on Friday night. Southern Idaho took the 79-62 win over the Eagles on Saturday.
On Friday night the Lady Eagles got in a hole early and played catch-up all night. At the half the team was down by 12.
It wasn't lack of shooting that hurt the team, it was the fact that the shots just couldn't find the hole for points.
In the second period of play CEU made several serious runs at the Cardinals. NIC's shooting in the final half was worse than the Eagles.
CEU shot 29 percent and held NIC to 28 percent. But it just wasn't enough. In the final five minutes of play, the Eagles once again put the cardinal on their heels and pulled within 10. But after a time out with two minutes to play, NIC went on a tear and as the buzzer sounded the deficit was 20.
Bruna Deichman scored 12 to lead the Lady Eagles. Stacey Stringham added 11 points and eight boards. Problems at the line also hurt CEU as they went 10-19 from the charity stripe.
Southern Utah also put the Lady Eagles down early on Saturday afternoon. CEU found themselves 12 under at the break and again struggled to find the net.
The Eagles actually had a better shooting percentage than CSI in the first half, but they let the CSI Eagles take more than twice as many shots at the hoop.
In the second period, things stayed more even. But CEU had put themselves in enough of a hole that they could not make up any ground. In the end they lost by 17.
Kaylie Robinson stepped up with a 24 point effort and pulled in nine rebounds. Libbie Alon scored 11.
The team will head to Rangely, CO for a conference match-up on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles have defeated CNCC for their only conference win so far.
