CEU men pull off upset, stay undefeated
By TERRY WILLIS Sun Advocate sports reporter
The CEU Golden Eagles were riding a three game conference win streak heading into the weekend battles with the Idaho colleges.
Northern Idaho was ranked second in the nation and was undefeated on the season. Facing the toughest test of the season, the Eagles took it to the Cardinals and came out on top 69-66.
Keeping their momentum they then took on Southern Idaho on Saturday and even though it took an overtime period to decide it, CEU remained undefeated in conference action with a 104-94 victory.
Friday night's action was intense from tip off to the final buzzer.
NIC found their big man in foul trouble after he picked up two quick ones and had to sit through the first half. Contact was hard and often as the two teams collided. Before the first half was up a Cardinal player was called for a flagrant foul and ejected.
On his way out he had a confrontation with the CEU bench and things were tense for a few minutes as players and coaches mixed. Another NIC player was ejected for leaving the bench. CEU missed all four technicals and then play resumed. At the break, the Eagles held a slim one point lead.
The game remained a tight battle all evening, much to the fan's delight. Both teams put their hearts and bodies on the line and in the end it was three points that settled the score.
Michael Glover lead the charge for CEU with 15. Isiah Williams and Jonathan Mills added 11. Mills also had 11 rebounds for another double-double.
Nick Thompson pulled in 10 boards in the win.
While that much effort may leave some teams with little gas for the next game, the Eagles were not yet done for the weekend. CSI came to call on Saturday and with another grueling effort came another satisfying win. While CEU lead by five at the break, the CSI Eagles erased the deficit in the second half and the game moved to overtime.
CEU stepped up and hit 80 percent from the floor and 90 percent from the line to outscore CSI by 10 in the extra minutes. CSI only hit 21 percent.Glover was again the leading scorer with 23 points. Williams followed with 22, including four from downtown.Mills had yet another double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Jorquim Vander had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Cliff Coliman added 13 points as well and Nick Thompson put in 11.
CEU is now 5-0 in conference action. They will take on Western Wyoming again this Tuesday at the BDAC. You can catch the action with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
