The Carbon Lady Dinos basketball team opened up their season against Grantsville at home last Tuesday night. The Cowgirls edged out the Dinos by a single point to hand Carbon their first loss. The final score was 42-41.

The Dinos are a young team with no seniors. Even though several of the juniors saw some good court time last season, it is a new look for the team.

The first half of play was typical of a rebuilding team taking the floor. Coach Cami Carlson said that her team struggled in the first half with mistakes on defense, but were also a little timid on offense.

As the game wore on, fundamentals became a bit sharper and the team began to play like Carlson knew they could. At the end of the first half the Dinos were down by a point.

At the end of the third period the deficit had grown to six.

By the final quarter the team made a push and with 12 seconds left Tia Pappas scored a one point lead with a three pointer the old fashion way a bucket and a foul shot.

Carlson set the defense and the team ran it perfectly.

They shut down the Cowgirl's leading scorer. But still a Grantsville player made a drive and threw up an off balanced shot at the buzzer that dropped in and stole back the lead and the win.

"I was not disappointed," Carlson said about the loss. "We played it perfectly at the end, but they got through. We did not play our usual hard nose defense in the first half and it hurt. We played a good fourth quarter. But we still have a lot to learn."

Pappas was the leading scorer for Carbon with 13 points and six steals.

Sophomore Miranda Averett added 12 points. Sara Potts pulled in nine rebounds.

The Lady Dinos hit the road this week for an away game against North Sevier on Tuesday and then a road match-up against the Emery Spartans in Castle Dale on Thursday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
