Staff Column: Exceptionally bad day no excuse for goofs

By RICHARD SHAW
Sun Advocate publisher

Monday was a bad day for me, in many ways. A lot of things in my personal life seemed to go to hell on Sunday and on top of that we had the largest regular section newspaper anyone can remember to deal with.

Still, the day should have gone better and I should have been better than I was putting together the opinion page that morning.

First I substituted a page and forgot to change the folio the little words on the top of the page that tell you it is the Sun Advocate, what the page number is and the date of the paper.

Tuesday was not Oct. 27, 2009. That was the first goof.

Then I did something I need to apologize to Carbon School District Patsy Bueno for. I put in her column concerning math in the district and spelled the word "mathematics" mathamatics. Citizens of Carbon County, your leading educator in the district can spell correctly, but the newspaper publisher can't. Please don't give her a bad time about my mistake.

Then I used a story about a battle that has often been forgotten during World War II. I called it the forgotton battle, instead of the forgotten battle.

Finally, as I was importing the political cartoons I found that the one for the top of the page had not come in properly. So I re imported, not realizing that a frame block on the bottom of the page that surrounds the reader's poll had been highlighted and the original import went into it.

I printed the page after that but I didn't get it off the printer, someone else did. I just didn't see the page again to catch any of this, and it also either missed proofing or got through it without anyone realizing the problems.

We all have bad days, but Monday was one of my worst. Many eyes see our pages before the go out, but that doesn't mean mistakes are always caught. Besides, I was the originator and it was my responsibility to make sure it went to the printer properly. I didn't do that and so it's all my fault.

So here I am today trying to make up for it. Hopefully this page will look better than that one did.
