Pinnacle VB takes USSA state
For the second year in a row, the Pinnacle Academy volleyball team took the state USSA championship title. Currently the team remains undefeated in league play as they were last year. PCA has participated in the Utah Schools Sports Alliance for two seasons now which is an association designed for small charter schools to compete. Even though numbers are lacking in the alliance, competition among the schools is fierce.
Coach Heidi Kay has enjoyed working with the girls and knows how hard they have worked. She is also the school's girls basketball coach.
The toughest competition this season was Merit Academy from Springeville. In the tournament on Friday Merit ended up being the first challenge to PCA as they headed toward their second straight title run.
But a sweep over Merit set them up to play Paridim Academy for the title match.
Coach Kay had strong praise for middle blocker, Kellie Jewkes defense through out the tournament and the season. She also pointed out that Julianne Price and Haley Spigarelli had some great serves and are the two top servers in the league. Both were also key as the team setters as well.
This year's team was comprised of Price, Spigarelli, Jewkes, Kylie Scovil, Haley Barns, Rilie Birch, Ashia Andrews, Monique Hullings, Hanna Urbanik, Paisley Kerr, Stephanie Giacoletto and Tesla Marakas.
Coach Kay is looking forward to next season.
With only two of the team graduating this year, next seasons line-up will be even more imposing to their opponents.
