Letter to the editor: Junior high girls out of control
By Nathaniel Woodward Price
Editor,
It was not even 10 years ago that I was a student at Mont Harmon Jr. High. But things seem eons different now.
I hear stories from younger siblings that horrify and disgust me. Tales of young 13 and 14 year old girls with language that would make a sailor blush and Lucifer cry. I am just about sick and tired of these "mean girls" and think its time to crack down before something terrible happens from some poor student being picked on daily.
Its not just the run of the mill teasing that existed when I was there. It is to the point that young girls are making disgusting sexual comments, crude jokes to overweight children, and being just plain vile. I don't expect them to change seeing as their parents are to blind to do anything and school teachers seem to just not care anymore.
Something must be done now. These children cannot go on like this. I would hate to see another Columbine especially in my community. To all parents that might read this, please sit down and talk to your child now. If not corrected these kids will never hold down a job or a relationship because they never learned compassion. Is love dead? Is harmony reviled?
As a community we need to stop this trend dead in its tracks. When I was in school we had what some kids (usually themselves) consider the "popular" crowd. These cliques need to phase out and make room for friendship and compassion. If each school would hold counseling sessions with small groups of students to discuss issues and teach civility then we may have one less child coming home crying.
Remember it all starts in the home.
