Girls soccer loses tie breaker, heads home
When the Carbon soccer teams played in region eight, they were guaranteed a play-off spot because Emery does not field a team. But with the move to region 10 this season, the girls knew they would have to earn their trip.
Things looked good early in the season as Carbon started region action with a win over ALA. Later on, ALA beat them and neither team had another win. So in a tie breaker game, Carbon and ALA faced off one last time and it was ALA that prevailed over the Dinos 4-0.
Coach Jerad Upwall had to face the Eagles with a team devastated by injuries and illness. With only 14 girls, he had only three subs to rotate in the entire game. In the first half, the Dinos held their own and were only down 1-0. But as the game wore on and fatigue set in, ALA was able to put the hurt on them and sent in three more goals to grab the win.
For Coach Upwall, the loss was twice as painful.
He had really felt like his team had a shot at earning the play-off berth and he was sad for his squad of girls who had come a long way over the season.
But the loss also signaled an end to his coaching days at Carbon High. Upwall was offered a job down in Las Vegas and he accepted. He is in the process of moving this weekend.
