Fourth place for golf team in state tournament
For Coach Tony Pinedo and the Carbon golf team, it was deja vu at this year's state tournament.
"When the season began for the Carbon High golf team, expectations were very high. With the team finishing in forth place last year and with all six golfers that participated at state returning for another year, the goal was to improve on last year and maybe even win the championship," said Pinedo.
Coach Pinedo went on to say: "As the season came to a close last Thursday, on the final day of the state tournament at Schneiter's Bluff, the team found themselves in a familiar place. Once again we finished in forth place. We were only six strokes behind Desert Hills for third place. But the team wasn't disappointed or upset. It had been the culmination to a great season for the team and a great career for the senior members."
One hundred and one golfers began the tournament and the Dinos quickly found themselves in forth place with a team total of 318. Carbon was led by senior Jordan Pinedo who fired a 76 to put him in sixth place in the individual race. Corbin Black, senior, shot a 78 and was in 12th place. Geoff Vogel, senior, scored an 82, as did Jaren McCourt.
Park City had the lead with a team total of 299. Judge Memorial came in second with a score of 304. The Dinos only trailed Desert Hills by three shots and was looking to overtake them for third place on the final day. But Carbon was unable to catch Desert Hills on the second day. Desert Hills shot a 307 and beat Carbon once again by three. Carbon came in with a 310.
The Dinos played much better on the second day as Pinedo leads the team with a 75. Black finished with a 77 and senior Justin Child shot a 79. Vogel and junior Gage Bigelow also fired 79s and McCourt ended the day with an 81.
With the total of 151 for both days, Jordan Pinedo finished tied for fifth place in the individual race. Black had a two day total of 155 and was tied for 11th place. Park City ended up winning the tournament finishing a shot ahead of Judge.
The final standings for the top 10 teams: Park City 603; Judge Memorial 604; Desert Hills 622; Carbon 628; Juan Diego 639; Wasatch 644; Union 648; Bear River 664; Hurricane 674; Delta 685.
Jordan Pinedo was selected to the Academic All-State Team. Only eight players are selected in 3A golf each year. All-State selections will be made soon and Pinedo feels that several of his team will be named to the team.
"The strength of our region, Region 10, was apparent when all four teams finished in the top seven teams in the State. This has been a tremendous year for the golf team," said Coach Pinedo.
He finished up with: "congratulations go to all the members of the team for all of their work and to all of the parents who have supported the team all year. I want to extend a special thanks to the senior members of the team, Corbin Black, Justin Child, Jordan Pinedo, and Geoff Vogel, for four years of excellence. The team has taken forth place twice and third once over the past three years. Although the season didn't end exactly how the team wanted it to, it was a GREAT YEAR! I also want to add my appreciation to coach Chris Nelson who volunteers his time and money for the team."
