Rantings and Ravings

Sun Advocate reporter

I seem to be a very well known person across the world wide web. Many, many dying people have known from some mysterious source that I am the kind of person that they would want to handle their estate. Many lawyers who had clients who died without heirs also know this to be true.

Now most of these people who need my help are overseas. For just giving them a place to send the money I can get a generous cut. Daily I am besieged by urgent requests for my services.

The requests come from Hong Kong, Taiwan and other places in Asia involving people who were killed in airplane disasters. E-mails are from lawyers, finance and commerce ministers, senators of foreign countries and religious figures.

Then there are the multitudes who are dying in Nigeria who know I am a good Christian person. Hmm. I am honored but since I cannot choose who is most worthy I do the humanitarian thing.

Lately I have been getting messages from a Nigerian government official who says that I have been scammed and they want to give me back money I never lost. They are insistant I must act immediately to give them the information they need to make things right. Funny that it is the same information I would have given the scammers if I had fallen for their scheme. Wouldn't the Nigerian government have that if they truly had a list of people who were scammed?

Now I am getting e-mails from the FBI. They are claiming that e-mails from the Nigerian government claiming to reimburse us for being scammed are a scam. These are very wordy, official seeming things. They need the same information to help me as all the others wanted. Go figure.

Now one thing I do know is that the FBI would have an official e-mail that ends with the .gov extension. The email I got ended with a Yahoo extension. Oh it started off with the words FBI in the address but I am not sure our budget woes have made it so the FBI has to rely on free Yahoo accounts to do their business.

The fact that variations of these letters and e-mails are so frequent right now makes me really worry how profitable they are.

They prey on people who are desperate and take them for whatever they can.

The really scary thing is that some people can be taken two more times as they try to fix the first mistake they made. I hope that no one who reads this was taken in by one of these scams.

The Internet is a wonderful tool for staying in touch, finding information, shopping and many other good and worthy activities. But it is also a weapon that others can use to invade out lives and cause pain, suffering and ruin.

Tread lightly and with great skepticism as you traverse this tool that is now a big part of our lives.

But despite that, I am the kind of person you could turn to to help with your estate if you don't have heirs. I wouldn't even need to take a cut to get it to the right charities of your choice. But please don't call, I have my hands full just hitting the delete button on my computer right now.
