Changes in regions mean changes in rivalries

Carbon and Emery High schools have already begun the athletic year and some changes have taken place.

This year when the Dinos and Spartans meet on the field of play, it will only be for fun unless it is in a state tournament. That's because while both schools remain in the 3A classification, the regions they are in have changed due to realignment.

Carbon is now a new resident of Region 10, which includes Union, Wasatch, Park City and the American Leadership Academy.

Over the years the Dinos have played most of these teams either in non-league games or in tournaments so it isn't like they are strangers to the Carbon kids.

Other 3-A regions include:

• Region 9. Canyon View, Cedar City, Deseret Hills, Hurricane

• Region 11. Bear River, Ben Lomond, Grantsville, Juan Diego, Judge Memorial.

• Region 12. Delta, Emery, Juab, Manti, North Sanpete, Richfield.

The AL Academy, Juab, Manti and Richfield are former 2-A schools that have moved up a grade.

In the 4A ranks there have also been a number of changes, including Uintah, a long time 3A school moving up the the next classification. These regions include:

•Region 5. Bonneville, Box Elder, Logan, Mountain Crest, Ogden, Sky View.

•Region 6. Bountiful, East, Highland, Olympus, Stansbury, Tooele, Woods Cross.

•Region 7. Lehi, Mountain View, Orem, Provo, Westlake, Timpanogos, Timpview.

•Region 9. Dixie, Pine View, Snow Canyon, Tuacahn.

Logan, Deseret Hills, Ogden and Salem Hills played in the 3A leagues last year.

Green River High will remain in the 1A ranks with Region 19.

With around 120 students, the school will likely be there for some time. Those 1A regions include:

•Region 16. Altamont, Duchesne, Manila, Rich, Tabiona. Uintah River is part of Region 16, but doesn't play team sports.

•Region 17. Christian Heritage, Intermountain Christian School, Mount Vernon, Oakley, Salt Lake Lutheran, St. Joseph, West Ridge.

•Region 18. Dugway, Liahona, Meridian, Tintic, Wasatch Academy, Wendover.

• Region 19. Green River, Monument Valley, Monticello, Navajo Mountain, Whitehorse;

•Region 20. Bryce Valley, Escalante, Milford, Panguitch, Piute, Valley, Wayne.
