Big turnovers and a varsity lacking experience make establishing a starting line-up tough for a coach. This is pretty much what Coach Gerald Upwall is feeling again this season as his squad takes the field for their pre-season action. First they were tested hard as the powerful 4A Uintah rolled into town.

Uintah had their way with the struggling Lady Dinos and Coach Upwall didn't even keep track of the final score. Only Felicia Olmos was able to send one into the net against the Utes in the contest to give Carbon its only score.

For Upwall the loss is just part of the process. He has some good talent, but many of the girls played on the JV squad last season and now it has become a job of finding places that work best for each player to mesh with the returning varsity.

They also have two fewer games this season as budgets in the sports department have been cut along with everything else in the Carbon School District. Teams have faced the prospect of either chopping two games from their preseason schedule or losing a paid assistant coaching spot. Soccer chose the shortened schedule.

The team heads over the mountain on Thursday to take on Maple Mountain in their second game of the season. They are a new school and Upwall hopes that the outcome against them will be more positive for the team.
