COLTON/LEHI - Dennis Victor Finch returned to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father following a lingering illness on Aug. 8, 2009.

He was born Jan. 17, 1931 to Charles Harold Finch and Etta Elizabeth Elmer Finch in Payson. Dennis grew up in Payson and on U.S. Highway 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon at Colton. He married Gloria Jane Scown on Nov. 25, 1954 in Lehi. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 17, 1965.

He attended schools in Payson, Scofield and Price, and College at College of Eastern Utah in Price. He was an excellent student; he skipped the eighth grade and graduated with top honors.

He worked hard as a child and adult, starting at 5 years old helping his grandfather herd sheep. He worked for the state road until he was called to fight in the Korean War; he received a Purple Heart and many other honors.

He was employed at the Geneva Steel Plant for 30 years. He also worked in the Lark underground mines at times of layoff from the steel plant.

When he retired, he moved to Colton to take care of his mother in her declining years from 1984 to 1992.

He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving with people he loved as Scofield branch president for 10 years.

Dennis loved his family deeply; he loved hunting and fishing with his family. His most sincere desire was to have a close, loving family, which they are because of his wonderful example.

He is survived by his eternal companion, Gloria; one sister, Charlotte (Michael) Stubbings; one brother-in-law, Blake Clifford Lee, both of Price; sons and daughters, Gloria Jean (Gary) Nelson, American Fork; Vickie Denise (Blaine) Hatch, Genola; Charles David (Lori) Finch, Indian Springs, Nev.; Susan (Joe) Miller, Pleasant Grove; Linda (Jonathan) Watters, Colton; Paul Vincent (Christine) Finch, Springville; 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Harold Finch and Etta Elizabeth Elmer Finch; sister, Cora Jean Lee; daughter, Jill Finch; grandsons, Clayson DeMile Munford and Bradley Scott Nelson; and granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Sorensen.

A viewing will be Thursday, Aug. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wing Mortuary Chapel in Lehi and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Scofield LDS Chapel; funeral services to follow. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Lehi City Cemetery.
