Teaching Children School Bus Safety

If your children take the school bus, it is your responsibility to teach them proper safety habits. After all, taking a school bus can have certain risks.

The main rule of taking a school bus is getting up early enough so that you won't miss it or have to chase it down the street! However, children should not get to their bus stop too early, since they might run around and get a bit reckless. Instead, they should wait for the school bus calmly. The sidewalk should be used to get to and from the bus stop, and if there is no sidewalk, children should always walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic.

Children should be taught to stay away from the street and wait until the bus has come to a complete stop, has its lights flashing and the door open before they approach it. They should always enter the bus in single file and hold on to the banister.

On the bus, children should remain seated and quiet so that they won't distract the driver. They should never stick their arms or head out the window, bounce around on their seat, or block the aisle with their book bag and lunchbox. In addition, they should never throw things out the bus.

Since most accidents occur when the bus is stopped, children should wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before leaving their seat, exit the bus calmly in single file and hold on to the banister. They should move away from the bus quickly and cross at least 10 paces in front of the bus so that the driver can easily see them. They should look both ways for traffic, cross the street quickly wit out running and never walk behind the bus.
