Avintaquin camping restricted to RV's
Due to an increase in bear activity and sightings at Avintaquin Campground on the Roosevelt/Duchesne District of the Ashley National Forest, overnight occupancy without a fully hard sided and structurally sound camping vehicle and sleeping outside a fully hard sided and structurally sound camping vehicle is prohibited from June 19, 2009 until further notice.
This closure affects the Avintaquin Campground located along the Reservation RidgeRoad, south of Duchesne Utah.
The Avintaquin Campground is a favorite campground for many in the Carbon County area, because it is close by and the roads there lead to such places as the Whire River area and Strawberry Reservoir.
"We are working to resolve this issue with the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources to ensure the campground is safe for those camping in the area," stated District Ranger John R. Kirkaldie.
For the purposes of this order, the following definitions will apply:
A fully hard sided camping vehicle: a vehicle, camper, trailer or other temporary sleeping structure that is entirely made of a rigid and physically tough material such as wood, hard plastic, fiberglass, glass windows or metal is acceptable.
Soft sided materials, on trailers, campers or otherwise, such as canvas, mesh, nylon fabric or soft plastics are not acceptable.
Structurally sound sheltes include a fully hard sided vehicle, camper trailer or other temporary sleeping structure. These are considered structurally sound if it is undamaged and functions as designed and intended by the manufacturer.
