With the skies blue again and the infield dry, the Helper American Legion returned to action, with a league match up between the Murray Spartans. The game was very ugly with a lot of errors, but in the end it was Helper who came out on top nine to eight.

"I guess in the end all that matters is whether you win or lose," Coach Jeff Cisneros said about the outcome.

Derick Anderson started on the mound for Helper and because it had been two weeks since he pitched last, the rust showed as he fell behind hitter after hitter. Murray scored a run in the top of the first, but luckily that was all they put up.

Helper answered with a pair of runs in the bottom to take a two to one lead. Neither team scored in the second inning. It was the Spartans who broke the stalemate with five runs in the third with two errors and four hits. The Spartans added one more in the fourth to take a seven to two lead.

Braden Bolotas came in to pitch in the fifth inning doing a great job. He allowed only one run and really had the Spartan hitters off balance.

Helper struggled to find offense all night long but eventually got something going in the bottom of the sixth, and broke out of their hitting slump with six runs on five hits. They also capitalized on two of Murray's errors.

The Spartans tied things up with a run in the top of the seventh. Helper could not score in the bottom so they headed to extra innings. After shutting the Spartans down in the top of the eighth, Danny Flahie led off with a single to right field for the home town boys. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. This set the table for Hayden Basinger who was at bat. Basinger took a two to two pitch into the right center field gap for the winning hit.

Chris Coleman and Basinger both had a pair of hits on the night. Nate Martinez hit a double that scored three runs in the sixth inning. Kash Jewkes also had a double in the first inning for two RBI's.

Helper now sits at three to zero in the Salt Lake Valley league. They traveled to Tooele on Wednesday and scores will be listed next week.

Cisneros looked ahead at the week to come, "this is a tough week for us as we have eight guys gone to basketball camp all week. This makes it tough on us as we have a few guys playing out of position, but I think it will really help us out in the long run."

The Helper tournament starts Thursday with Helper opening the event with the first game at 5:15 pm against Roosevelt.
