It takes place year after year, yet many people in the area don't know that it takes place. This year the Rocky Mountain Coal Mine Rescue Competition will be taking place at the College of Eastern Utah from June 2-4.

These dates are a deviation from the past when the competition has usually been held in August.

The competition this year will pit 20 teams from Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.

The 33 year old competition is always exciting to watch as teams follow various kinds of protocols for safety, medical aide and mine rescue.

The event will culminate in an awards banquet that takes place on June 4 at the Elks Lodge in Price.

The competition schedule begins on Tuesday at 7 a.m. with the Benchman Contest in the Career Center on the CEU campus. Then the competition contiues in the BDAC as first aide and the Benchman Competition happens at 7:30 a.m.

On Wednesday the Mine Rescue Contest begins at 8 a.m. on the college green west of the Reeves Administration Building.

Thursday will bring the Pre-shift Contest at 8 a.m. which will also be held on the college green.

This competition involves skill, practice and intelligence. All the teams from the various mines are highly trained and motivated to win this competition. Most think of it as a very big feather in their cap when their team wins.

Those involved in sposoring this event include the Bill Barrett Corporation, BHP Billiton, Fairmont Supply, Kennametal Inc., Bio-Marine Ntron, Canyon Fuel Skyline Mine, Canyon Fuel Sufco Mine, Carbon County Commissioners, Consolidation Coal Company, Emery County Commissioners, Four Corners Behavioral Health, Omega Transworld/Burrell Mining, REI Drilling, Inc., Jay-Max Sales, United Central Industrial Supply and Western Mine Tool, Inc.

The Carbon County Chamber of Commerce (Ann Evans) and the Castle Country Travel Bureau (Kathy Smith) are also sponsors of the competiton along with Price Floral which is providing flowers for the banquet.

The competition is open to the public. Those that want to attend the banquet on Thursday need to make reservations no later than Wednesday by calling 637-2788.
