Carbon High School Girls Golf finishes 11th at state tournament
By TERRY WILLIS Sun Advocate sports reporter
The first year Carbon golf team made their presence felt as they burst on the scene this season. They placed a strong third in region play and earned a trip to the state tournament.
In their first state championship tournament the Carbon's Lady Dinos made 186 points to finish 11th out of 14 teams.
Kelcy Otani and Lexi Gagon lead the team with 66 and 64 points respectively. Haley Shiner played hard on the back nine to make 56 points.
"This was a great learning experience not only for the girls, but for myself." stated Coach Kenji Otani about the experience.
Ogden High won the state championship with a score of 249 points. Park City (238) and Desert Hills (233) finished second and third.
Individually, Park City's Sami Crouch took medalist honors making 88 points. Kelcy Otani finished 28th and Lexi Gagon finished 31st. Otani and Gagon have been the foundation of Carbon's team all season.
Coach Otani summed up the fledgling team's season,
"I am so proud of all my girls. In our first year, we played our way into the state championship and we have two freshmen place in the top 50 percent. Also, I don't think many other coaches can say that every one of their players played varsity, at least once this season and every one of them had a score count towards the team score. I have a great team."
Coach Otani is already looking ahead to next season's possibilities.
"I can't wait for next season and I hope more girls will come out and participate next year. It was so much fun teaching, coaching and watching these young women play this game of golf. We are a young team and from what I have seen the sky is the limit. I would like to thank the school board and all the parents, for giving myself and Tom King the opportunity to create what we hope will be a fun and winning girls golf program."
