In the first year as a high school squad, the Carbon High boy's tennis team finished strong. They were well represented at the state tournament.

Andres Hernandez qualified in singles to go to state. Hernandez ended up losing in the semi finals to the eventual champion, Jordan Lyden of Desert Hills.

According to Coach Pete Riggs it was a fun match to watch.

Jordan Pinedo and Cameron Hansen made it to the tournament as a doubles team. They came out strong against the team from Logan, but weren't able to keep up their intensity and lost in straight sets in the first round.

Summing up the tournament and the season Riggs was already focusing on the future.

"We did well," he said. "For me this has been a learning year. I would say that's probably the way most of the players feel too. We saw a lot of improvement with our newer players and our more experienced players as well. One thing that we will be focusing on this summer and next year is being more aggressive, in better condition and to get into ready position as soon as possible."

He also had more to say.

"In the long term, what we are going to need to have a competitive tennis program is an indoor court where they can practice all year long," he stated. "Also (we need) someone who will start teaching tennis lessons way before the high school level for our kids. The boy that won the state 3A singles this year and beat Andres (Hernandez) is only a sophomore and has been playing since he was five. But until then we will be working hard and doing what we can to make this a quality program."
