The Lady Dinos softball team had a long week even before their trip to Grantsville for the state tournament.

They lost 10-3 to Salem Hills on Tuesday but had a 7-6 come from behind win against the Skyhawks on Wednesday and finally ran out of steam with a 10-0 loss to Timpview on Thursday.

This put them facing the top 3A team in the state, Grantsville, on Saturday in Tooele County for the first round of the state tournament. A regrouped team battled hard, but came up just short in a 4-1 loss to the Cowgirls. Then almost immediately they had to go back on the field and take on powerhouse Wasatch and again played their hearts out to just miss out on a win. Wasatch beat them 5-4.

"Our girls played awesome.," remarked Coach Tony Pinedo as he summed up the week. "We had a great come from behind win against Salem Hills on Thursday and then our girls were exhausted mentally, physically and emotionally when they played Timpview. Not that they didn't play hard, they just didn't have anything left. We had a light practice on Friday and I told them to go home and get to bed early and show up well rested. They came out Saturday ready to play."

Kenzie Cave took the mound against Grantsville and both teams remained scoreless until Grantsville put up three in the fourth. Pinedo felt like the third run in that inning was a fluke because of a missed call at second where the Cowgirl player who scored should have been called out.

Still Carbon didn't quit and posted a run against an excellent pitcher in the sixth. A dropped pop fly in the sixth let Grantsville steal another run and the Dino bats just couldn't get the hits needed to catch up.

Against Wasatch the Lady Dinos took a 2-0 lead into the third. Cave had started the game and just ran out of steam as Wasatch tied it at two apiece. Brittany Gustas came in for the second time in relief and pitched a great game. The Lady Wasps went ahead by a pair in the fourth, but the Dinos answered back with their own two runs in the top of the fifth.

Wasatch pushed a run across in the bottom of the frame. In the seventh Carbon got a couple of runners on the bags, but just could not find the key hit to score the run. So in the final game of the season it came down to a single run.

Coach Tony Pinedo felt like it was positive way to end the season. Even though they weren't able to win they played their best ball of the season against the best teams. One thing he felt also helped them play was the great fan support from friends, family and the school administration. He felt like the entire season had been a good one and he is excited about next season.

"We are going to miss our seniors and their leadership, but we have eight starters returning next year," he said. "There are another couple of young players who saw some varsity experience as well. The girls are participating in summer softball and we are already looking ahead for some good, positive things from next year's team."
