Rantings and Ravings
Well I did it. I now have a Facebook page. I wasn't going to have one. Nor did I want a My Space page. That one I still don't have.
I don't want to blog or twitter. I do instant message with people from the office but that is about it. I also don't do text messages unless I have to and I promise all of you, I absolutely will never be sexting. If you don't know what that is, go ask a teen.
So, I broke down and got a Facebook page because most of my family has one. That includes my 79 year old mom. She doesn't have her picture on hers.
It seems like an easy way to post and look at family pictures. We are scattered from California to Minnesota and most points in between. Passing around photos of grandkids and grandnieces and nephews is tough.
The funny thing about my family is that we hardly call each other. I call my girls several times a week. But unless I call my brothers and sisters, I never hear from them.
Oh I take that back, I get forwarded e-mail jokes and political statements from them. You would think they could just write a quick note or something to say hi while they were doing that.
Maybe they are mad because I am always the one to break the circle of the "return this to me and 10 friends in the next 10 minutes for good luck" emails. I sent one around once and then went and checked my snail mail. I didn't get a big check from someone. I got my 401K statement and found out I had lost $2,000. That was before the stock market tanked. Go figure.
My older sister did send virtual flowers to my Facebook page to welcome me. They were on an icon that was less than an inch big. Tulips, I think.
The facebook friends also send virtual drinks and steaks and hugs to each other. It seems a competition to have a lot of friends as well. My sister has 222. I have six and I actually know them all.
I guess I am a bit old fashioned when it comes to communicating with others. I like a good face to face talk the best. If not in person then a phone call will do. I like to hear the emotion a person has about what they are talking about. I also want to give real flowers and hugs to those people who are close to me.
I remember calling my grandmother back in the 1960's as a kid. She wanted to know why I never wrote to her. I said I was calling her once a week. She said it wasn't the same and please send her a letter soon. I did.
Communication has advanced to all these other forms and we will never look back. Even the newspaper is working on other ways to get you the news like blogs and e-papers.
So I try to embrace what I must to stay abreast of things. So I do have a Facebook page and I have written comments on a few blog sites.
But I really, really promise you all-I will never send a sext of myself.
